Code Requirements

Fire Extinguisher Inspection Requirements
Under NYC Law

Fire extinguisher inspection in New York City is governed by NYC Fire Code Chapter 9 (FC Chapter 9) and NFPA 10 — Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers. Both apply simultaneously — extinguishers that meet NFPA 10 can still fail FDNY inspection if NYC-specific placement or documentation requirements aren't met.

Governing Standard
NFPA 10 — Standard for Portable Fire Extinguishers
Defines extinguisher classification, placement and travel distance, inspection frequency, hydrostatic testing intervals, and documentation requirements.
NYC Code Reference
NYC Fire Code Chapter 9
NYC-specific requirements layered on top of NFPA 10 — governs tagging format, Certificate of Fitness qualifications, and FDNY enforcement procedure.

Monthly visual inspection versus annual inspection: NFPA 10 requires a monthly visual check — confirming the extinguisher is present, accessible, and shows a normal gauge reading — which building staff can perform themselves. The annual inspection is more thorough and must be performed by a certified technician, covering physical condition, weight (for CO2), mounting, and issuing a new FDNY tag. Both are required; neither substitutes for the other.

Who can perform inspections: NYC Fire Code requires fire extinguisher inspections to be performed by a holder of a Certificate of Fitness (COF) for portable fire extinguisher servicing. All County Fire technicians hold current NYC COFs — documentation available on request.
