Hydrostatic Testing

What Hydrostatic Testing Is
and Why It's Required

Hydrostatic testing pressure-tests an extinguisher's cylinder itself — not just its contents — to confirm the metal shell can still safely hold its rated pressure. It's a separate requirement from the annual inspection, and it exists because metal cylinders fatigue over time from repeated pressure cycles, corrosion, and wear, even on units that are never discharged.

What the Test Involves
Cylinder Pressure Test to Rated Capacity
The cylinder is emptied, pressure-tested to a multiple of its rated working pressure, and inspected for expansion or leaks before being refilled and returned to service — or condemned if it fails.
Why It's Required
Metal Fatigue Over Time
Repeated pressure cycling, temperature swings, and environmental exposure weaken cylinder walls over years — hydrostatic testing catches a weakened cylinder before it becomes a safety risk.

You don't have to track this yourself. County Fire logs the test date stamped on every unit we service and manages scheduling across your entire building, so hydrostatic testing happens on time without you having to track individual cylinder dates.

Hydrostatic Test Interval by Type
Extinguisher Type
Test Interval
Dry Chemical (most common)
Every 12 years
CO2
Every 5 years
Wet Chemical (kitchen)
Every 5 years
Water / Foam
Every 5 years
Interval shown is the maximum allowed under NFPA 10. Units that are damaged, discharged, or show signs of corrosion may require testing sooner. County Fire confirms your building's exact schedule during service.
